[Andrew Malcolm]
In the Summer of 2016
I drove my 1st electric car, a 2014 Nissan Leaf, at a car show at
Southwards Museum, and I was hooked.
By September of the same year I had imported into New
Zealand one of Kapiti’s 1st electric vehicles, put in my own charge station and installed solar panels
to offset the cost of running it, all for the same price as a petrol car the same size and age.
As the battery ability is now only has a range of about 100-110 km we have sold it to an electric loving local who will make good use of it locally, while replacing it with its newer sibling a 2019 Nissan Leaf, that has over twice that range. Still not as impressive as its 2023 big brother at 385km range, but enough for us for local driving while still able to use our own charge station here at the Funeral Home and our own solar generated power from the panels on the chapel (railway side) roof.
While battery power may not be the long term solution for the planet, it is however another step in our Funeral Homes journey to be CARBON NEUTRAL, saving us, and ultimately our clients, expense.
So what next? An electric hearse for Natural Funerals? That would be great, unfortunately, there are no long wheel base electric vehicles suitable in New Zealand yet, but … watch this space!
