The topic of Natural Funerals covers a wide range of issues from the full “natural burials”, in special burial grounds, to simple choices throughout the funeral process that minimises the environmental impact and carbon footprint. Today I talk about Clean Cremations.
Not all Cremators are created equally
Choosing a natural burial is a lovely way to return to the elements however almost 80% of those in Kapiti and greater Wellington still opt for cremation, and this too can still be eco-friendly through a ‘clean cremation’.
It must be outlined that not all cremators are equal, with some burning more cleanly than others due to design, age and emissions controls. Some older cremators are ‘Cold Hearth’ cremators with a hearth (floor) and an anti chamber.
The newer cremators, like the one at Kapiti Crematorium, are ‘Hot hearth’ cremators and have a secondary chamber underneath the floor of the cremator that use the heat to ‘re burn’ the emission. This emissions focus can mean slower cremation time but ensure very clean emissions. Most people think a more modern cremator would be quicker, however the focus is more on clean air than speed, and thus the cremation time is similar to the old machines at 2.5 to 4 hours per cremation, depending on weight, gender and casket type.
The final piece to the ‘Natural Clean Cremation’ in Kapiti is Kapiti Crematoriums additional ‘clean air controller’. This is an additional piece of equipment purchased with this machine. It is a special camera on the base of the cremator stack, that looks through the stack to the other side where a receiver sits. It looks for the faintest sign of smoke, and when seeing any talks to the computer and alters the controls to keep the air clean.
This technology is so clever we can even turn the entire unit on remotely to ensure it is ready when we arrive on site in Valley Road, Paraparaumu.
When recording your funeral wishes, consider a ‘clean cremation’ with Kapiti Crematorium, exclusively available through Kapiti Coast Funeral Home.
